Chapter 10

During their mealtimes, the wizard’s mood varied greatly. Sometimes, he was monosyllabic and sharp-tongued so that Rosemary was almost afraid to say anything. At other times, he was eager to talk on many topics. In the latter mood, he was an agreeable companion. As Rosemary learned more of his twilight world, she grew fond of the wizard. Soon, she realized that there were days when the Demon King was watchful. Simon Strange was unable to glimpse his Shadow domain and the spirit world grew dark and menacing. On these bad days, her wizard appeared sullen and bad-tempered, when his mind was elsewhere and the atmosphere was heavy. Sometimes, her questions could lift his gloom.

Once, when he seemed unusually fatigued, she asked him, “How do you find the energy to travel the cosmic planes every day? It is hard work for me to practice the illusions in our lessons.”

“My journey does take energy, which is why I need to consume more food,” he explained. “My powers come in part from my knowledge of the spirits. You could say I have befriended many spirits in my travels. Some of them choose to appear in this castle and serve me.”

“Are they not your slaves?” she questioned.

“No, they are free to leave. In fact, my castle has become more popular since you arrived. The spirits are curious.”

“The spirits are curious about me?” Rosemary said in amazement.

“They have long been aware of you. They were attracted by your strong focus on the Shadow. Now, you throw disturbing ripples into my cosmos.”

“Does Kafkad have spirit servants?”

“He has enslaved monstrous demons from the spirit world. They share with him a love of evil and hatred for mankind. They are the enemies of my spirit friends.”

Rosemary shuddered, “Will your friendly spirits fight for us against the Shadow?

“Some will,” he said thoughtfully. “Others are more gentle entities.”

“I did not realize there were unseen battalions on that level.” She stretched her hand towards his arm and asked, “How can I help? My illusions will not deceive the spirits.”

His voice sincere, Wizard Strange said, “You help me by listening to me and sharing meals with me. How else would I know what I am fighting for?”

She blushed at his intense stare and shook her head, uncertain what he meant.

“Also,” he added, “you can guard my physical body when battle commences. My spirit will be far away and in danger.”

There were other days when the wizard slipped easily past the Shadow, or else he was encouraged by finding friendly spirits who would aid him against the evil Kafkad. On these occasions, Simon Strange was good humored and even grew lively. One such day, he met Rosemary as she stepped inside from the garden. Clasping her hands, he swung her round in a dance of jubilation because he had observed one of the Shadow’s weaknesses and had gained confidence of his own advantages.

His touch sent an electric thrill through Rosemary. She laughed at this wild dance and soon she was swept into breathlessness.
